Nootropics to Help Flex your Mental Fitness

Nootropics to Boost Mental Fitness: Enhance Focus, Clarity, & Cognitive Performance
What are nootropics and why should I take them?

Have you noticed the word ‘nootropics’ on some of your favourite functional drinks or heard it mentioned on a podcast, but don’t quite understand what they are? This trending class of ‘brain boosting’ ingredients are designed to enhance cognitive performance -  focus, energy, memory, mood, relaxation, attention, creativity, stress resistance and motivation.

Nootropics can influence brain function by modulating the production, release, or activity of certain brain chemicals or ‘neurotransmitters’ such as dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and GABA. However, the specific effects of a nootropic depend on its mechanism of action, as not all target all of these neurotransmitters. Some may enhance the availability or activity of one neurotransmitter while having little or no effect on others.

Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman stated said the best nootropic is sleep, but the second best thing could be supplementation with some of these well researched ingredients. So if you’re feeling scatterbrained, lost focus or simply want to optimise your productivity, will these help you? and what are the most effective ones to look out for?

Caffeine

Arguably the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world is caffeine, which is a powerful nervous system stimulant to help energy, to keep you alert and reduce mental fatigue. Cognitive benefits of caffeine include improved attention, reaction time and memory.1

The recommended amount of caffeine is 200 mg in a single dose or up to 400 mg per day (around 3-4 cups of coffee) for a healthy adult. Effects on individuals can vary due to genetic variations in caffeine metabolism, making some people more sensitive than others.

The downside of caffeine is that it can heighten anxiety in certain individuals and in excess, can disrupt sleep. It is best to avoid caffeine late in the day and consume no more than 400 mg per day.

L-Theanine

An amino acid in green tea, L-theanine has been shown to elevate GABA, dopamine and serotonin which promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety levels. A clinical trial found that over 4 weeks, healthy experienced a decrease in stress-related symptoms.2

L-theanine can impact ‘alpha brain wave activity’ which supports a relaxed but alert mental state, promoting creativity, focus and attention.

Synergy of Caffeine and L-Theanine

Combining caffeine and L-theanine has been shown to enhance cognitive performance by improving focus, alertness, and mental clarity without the jitteriness associated with caffeine alone. Research indicates that L-theanine, which promotes relaxation, counters the overstimulation of caffeine, creating a balanced state of "calm focus." Studies have demonstrated those who took this combination saw an increase combining these two ingredients improves attention, reaction time, and working memory .3

Creatine

While traditionally associated with physical performance and muscle energy, creatine also plays a role in cognitive processes by supporting the energy demands of the brain. Creatine is stored in the brain as ‘phosphocreatine’, which acts as an energy reservoir for ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is the primary energy currency of cells, including neurons, which are highly energy-dependent. Supplementation increases phosphocreatine levels, improving energy availability for cognitive tasks, particularly during high mental fatigue or stress.4

A meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials found moderate evidence that creatine improves memory and processing speed in adults. It was especially effective in individuals with preexisting health conditions, those aged 18–60, and women.

B Vitamins

A B vitamin complex provides a range of cognitive benefits due to the combined effects of vitamins like B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folate and B12. These vitamins work synergistically to support energy production in the brain, enhance neurotransmitter synthesis, and improve overall cognitive function.

Taking nootropics daily can be an effective way to enhance mental fitness, focus, and clarity. By supporting brain function and promoting neuroplasticity, nootropics help improve mental performance and boost cognitive abilities. These supplements can help sharpen focus, increase alertness, and improve memory, while also reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity, particularly during challenging tasks.

Regular use may foster better productivity and sharper thinking, allowing for sustained focus and improved cognitive endurance. When combined with a healthy lifestyle, nootropics can support both short-term mental performance and long-term brain health, helping you maintain clarity and sharpness throughout the day.

Closing Thoughts:

Nootropics offer a powerful way to enhance cognitive performance and mental clarity, particularly when paired with a balanced lifestyle. Whether you're seeking sharper focus, better stress management, or improved memory, these brain-boosting supplements can help you unlock your potential. However, nootropics work best as part of a holistic approach—prioritize quality sleep, a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and stress management to truly optimize your brain health and performance. Always choose well-researched ingredients and consult a professional for personalized advice. Your brain deserves the best!
