Importance of Hydration for Wellbeing: Boost Health, Focus, and Performance

Have you heard the saying that “Most problems in your life can be solved by drinking water”? This is not too far from the truth! Our bodies are around 60% water and it is crucial to maintain hydration throughout the day to help our systems thrive. We all know that feeling when we haven’t had enough water to drink, there are some obvious signs however chronic dehydration can be linked to more serious health conditions too. This includes mood disruption, constipation, dry/itchy skin, anxiety, dental decay, kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

If you’re working outdoors in a hot, physically demanding environment or you’re someone who undertakes intense exercise, consuming adequate fluids, including electrolytes is essential.

  • Prevents heat related illness

Sweating causes us to lose water and crucial electrolytes, primarily sodium and potassium, through our skin. If these are not adequately replaced, dehydration occurs - the body struggles to regulate core temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

  • Supports blood pressure and cardiovascular function

We need to be adequately hydrated for our blood to flow smoothly through our body. Dehydration causes a reduction in plasma volume (the liquid component of blood), which increases the concentration of red blood cells and other particles, resulting in "stickier" blood. This means the heart has to work harder to pump it through the blood vessels.

  • Supports mood and concentration

The brain is sensitive to dehydration. Even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function, affecting focus, memory, and concentration. Studies show that dehydration causes the stress hormone cortisol, to spike which can affect our mood and makes us feel irritable.

  • Essential for digestion and detoxification

Normal digestive processes require secretions such as saliva, stomach acid, bile and enzymes to adequately break down and digest food. If we are dehydrated, we are affecting the release of these essential fluids.

  • Boosts work performance

If you lack adequate water or electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium, your body will not move well! It can lead to lethargy, muscle cramping and fatigue. Not only is being hydrated required for mental focus (as per point 3), but a physical job requires maintaining adequate fluid so your muscles get enough oxygen delivered to them. It also helps to remove by-products such as lactic acid, to maintain strength and to help with recovery post-exercise.

Remember to maintain your water intake throughout the day and be mindful of consuming additional essential electrolytes in a delicious nutrient enhanced beverage, if you have been undertaking vigorous activity or working in the heat – your body will thank you for it!
